How to set a strong password

You probably have lots of usernames and passwords. These can be used for everything from checking your water bill to logging into your home Wi-Fi.

It can be tempting to choose passwords that are easy to remember. But using strong passwords for online banking will go a long way. This will keep your bank accounts and money safe, and protect you from financial fraud.

Also, it's a good idea to use different passwords for all your accounts. That way, if hackers manage to guess or obtain your password for one account, they can't take over all of them.

Tips to strengthen your password

Don't use a password that can be easily guessed, like your favourite football team or TV show.

You can create a strong, memorable password by using 3 random words. Add numbers and symbols to make your password even stronger. For example:

TurfChainPasta4!

To create a strong password, you can also take the first letter of each word and numbers from a sentence you find easy to remember. For example, you can create a password out of 'My Dog Is Called Cyril And I Live At 45 Acacia Avenue Staines' like this:

MDICCAILA45AAS

Make it even stronger by adding 5 exclamation marks. You now have a strong password with 19 characters that's easy to remember:

MDICCAILA45AAS!!!!!

Smart tips

  • Choose a unique password for online banking and don't use it for anything else
  • Use a mix of upper case and lower case letters, numbers and symbols
  • Make your password as long as possible
  • Change your password regularly to stay safe
  • Always log off websites and devices when you've finished using them

What not to do

Don't use anything that would be easy to work out as a password.

Such as:

  • Names of family members
  • Names of pets
  • Favourite football teams
  • Birthdays

Don't use any of the following either:

  • The word 'password' or anything similar, like 'p@assword'
  • Numerical sequences, like '12345'
  • Easily recognised keypad patterns, such as '14780' or 'qwerty'
  • Common words from the dictionary that hackers could easily guess

Remember to never write down or share your passwords. Use different usernames and passwords for online banking and other services.
